Debate about how it scientifically works are heated, but most Europeans are now going to a homeopath as their first course of treatment and 20 percent of Scottish GPs currently practise this medicine. Many scientific studies have been carried out that proves its efficacy medically and especially in flu outbreaks like swine flu H1N1.
Indeed, homeopathy has recently become Europe’s fastest-growing form of alternative medicine. Over 5 million French people have spent more than $20 million on a much-used homeopathic remedy, Oscillococcinum, to treat the flu. This medicine could be the natural solution for the epidemic. No nasty chemicals and it reduces the flu symptoms by three days in comparison to a vaccine that has not been tested and takes up to six weeks to create an effect.
Three out of four Europeans know about homeopathy and of these, 29% use it for their own health care. In Europe there are 54,000 specialised homeopathic medical doctors and practitioners and between 25% and 40% of all European health care practitioners prescribe homeopathy. Private European insurers cover homeopathic treatments and the World Health Organisation recommends them. A few years ago Spain took an initiative to incorporate homeopathy into its national health service. There are over 250,000 homeopaths in India.
Back home we are lagging somewhat behind, with Classical Homeopathy still in its infancy in South Africa, although increasing numbers of doctors in South Africa are training in homeopathy. In 2006, approximately 80 South African medical doctors were also registered as homeopaths. While use of complementary modalities in South Africa has not been measured, the South African Health Products Association estimated in 1998 that the South African complementary medicines market was worth over R1,2 billion at the time.
One area starting to gain more converts every day is self-help homeopathy for common ailments. Says Genie Rowson, Fellow of the British Institute of Homeopathy and author of self-help guide There’s a remedy for that!, “All over the world, such as in India, the UK, across Europe and the US, homeopathy is widely used as a self-help option, to very good effect. It is my mission with the book I wrote, to demystify homeopathy and encourage the use of homeopathy by all South Africans for common, everyday ailments. “The more you use homeopathic remedies, which are gentle, affordable and most important of all, safe, the healthier you will become and the healthier you and your family will be. Homeopathic remedies are safe for use in pregnancy, by tiny babies and can also be used as a prophylatic or preventative treatment.”
Adds Rowson, “Because homeopathic medicine boosts the immune system and strengthens general resistance, it can be used very effectively in conjunction with other systems of medicine. For example, an antibiotic may suppress one’s cold and flu systems, but a homeopathic remedy taken at the same time will boost the body’s own healing mechamisms and thereby boost the immune system and the person’s resistance to bacteria and viruses, which only flourish in a weakened system.”
CLINICAL TESTS
The flu remedy Oscillococcinum was first studied in France during the 1987 flu epidemic caused by an H1N1 virus similar to the swine flu of today. This multi-centre study examined the effect of Oscillococcinum (200c) on the early symptoms of flu. Results were published in the peer-reviewed British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology. More patients in the treatment group recovered completely in the first 48 hours than the control group (17 percent of patients with active treatment compared to 10 percent of controls).
In 1990, German scientists replicated the French study of Oscillococcinum. They used the same criteria as the previous study. After 48 hours of treatment with Oscillococcinum the treatment group had considerably milder symptoms than the control group, and the number of patients with no symptoms from day two onward was significantly greater in the treatment group (17.4 % compared to the control group 6.6 %). These studies show that homeopathy carries the potential to make a dramatic difference in any flu epidemic without the risk of drug side effects.
